Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My first grade students come to school eager to learn everyday. They are excited about learning new things and are very curious about the world around them.

This year I decided to try something new.

I started offering tutoring sessions for students AND their parents to attend. This has been a huge success! Every Tuesday from 3-4:00 I show parents, students and their siblings how to practice their weekly spelling and sight words in fun, messy and creative ways.

Every year when we return from summer break we see a "summer slide" with our students. We notice that many of their district mandated assessments in the fall are lower than their spring scores before we left for break.

I want my students to maintain the skills they've worked hard to develop while also learning new skills during the summer months. That's why I'm asking for these fun supplies for them to use at home with their families to continue their learning.

When we have our last tutoring session of the current school year I would love to provide my families with fun materials to practice spelling and sight words that they will learn in second grade. This will help them feel confident and capable as they enter a new grade and new classroom.

The trays and colored sand will provide a sensory experience as they trace their spelling and sight words. The scented markers will also provide a sensory experience as they form words onto colorful construction paper. Sidewalk chalk can encourage outdoor learning on a nice summer day. Students are so inspired to write when they get to use scratch art paper.

Thank you for reading about how you can help my students continue their learning and preparing them for the next school year.
