Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My occupational therapy students are motivated, engaged, and curious students whose developmental delays inhibit their ability to independently participate in daily classroom routines and activities. These challenges can affect them in a variety of ways, including: fine motor development, visual-perceptual development, hand-eye coordination, handwriting development, sensory processing abilities, and difficulties with attention.

My students love to showcase the skills they learn in the therapy room during their classroom work.

I have found that the best way for my students to learn a new skill is to practice it across a variety of mediums. This might include a developmental game, arts and crafts, gross motor play, obstacle courses, imaginary play, sensory exploration, and direct practice with a functional skill. Many of my students do not get the opportunity to practice these skills outside of the school day which makes the time we spend together in the therapy room that much more important!

My Project

These materials are critical in making our therapy room and classrooms accessible for all of our students. Therapy balls are a multi-use tool that will be used as alternative seating for students who need the opportunity for structured movement, and will also allow students to build core strength and stability during their time in occupational therapy. Foot bands will allow students to bring their therapy strategies into the classroom, and will promote improved attention and focus during tabletop work. Similarly, pencil grips are an essential tool in assisting students in carrying over therapy strategies and goals in the classroom setting, and promote improved rates of progress for students of all ages. Lastly, we need a toner cartridge to allow for the creation of unique learning activities for all!
