Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

During 2014-2015, each Wednesday afternoon dogs and trainers walked up three flights of stairs to the dance studio, while both students and staff watched in awe. A group comprised of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders entered the room and closed the door, entrenching themselves in a world of dogs that felt so different than anything else they had done before!

This year it is our goal to do this again!

The children here at my school are amazing. They are joyous, adventurous, and hard-working all the while learning to become resilient. Alongside those attributes, it’s hard to sometimes imagine the poverty they live in, the hunger they have and the tremendous obstacles they have to overcome. The majority of my students live in the housing projects, in an apartment with many people, where their families struggle to give them the attention they deserve because of a host of competing priorities. They come in to our school in sixth grade an average of three years behind their on-grade level counterparts, and they work through anger, frustration, exasperation, desperation to catch up. Many of them are in foster care, involved with the juvenile justice system, or have open cases with ACS. They are digging themselves out of a hole that society has put them in, and they are at a school full of love and care along with utmost of motivation to make that happen.

My Project

This past year, select group pf seventh graders got to enjoy the beauty of three therapy dogs and their amazing trainers as they visited them during advisory each Monday morning for ten straight weeks. They learned dog training skills, about shelter-life, visited the ASPCA, and were immersed in a world where they could make a difference in a dog’s life. They were empowered, inspired, and dedicated. They found the power of empathy, which for any middle school kid is no easy task, and by the end of the ten weeks, they were different kids. This year, we want to give even more middle school kids, primarily sixth and seventh graders this same fulfilling opportunity. We want to give a group of ten kids at time a chance to experience the love and peace that spending time with dogs allows. Kids will watch related videos, provide food, water, and treats and ultimately train dogs to complete obstacle courses and do tricks such as lying down, and rolling over. They will be empowered by this.

Kids will feel like they can make a difference as they will see this concretely in the context of the dogs.

At a time where many of them feel dis-empowered and frustrated, they will have a chance to feel heard, listened to, and powerful. They will have a break from the rest of their week, when they struggle with such insurmountable obstacles, and for a short hour, experience the straight and pure joy that dogs allow. They will leave the program with a stronger sense of self-esteem and an improved and renewed understanding that everyone can make a difference in the world.
