My Project

I want to create a sensory-friendly learning space to help students maintain focus, reduce stress, and improve their ability to learn and thrive in the classroom. These therapeutic spaces are designed to create more inclusive learning that is accessible for all students, including those with vision and language difficulties, learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, and any student who needs a safe, quiet room for calming according to Edutopia, 2017.

Over my teaching career, I have taught many neurodiverse students, and by doing research and observation a sensory classroom helps reduce overstimulation and promotes academic growth and student well-being.

With minimal supplies such as 2-3 yoga balls, 2-3 fidgets, and 2-3 cushions all classroom students have little opportunity to maximize using these modalities. I have witnessed immediate positive responses to inappropriate behavior from the effects of sensory processing tools. Students learn to recalibrate and reduce distress by embracing this approach and empowering themselves to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. I am requesting a variety of sensory-friendly supports including, wobble stools, balance balls, and sensory chairs.

Finally, I practice positive reinforcement using a variety of nostalgic and fun products to encourage positive behaviors, like Smencils, liquid motion timers, and pop bubbles. I strongly agree with research that confirms children receiving positive feedback works. The major purpose is to increase a desired behavior, while at the same time offering students a sense of relatedness and experiences in a classroom culture that is engaging and productive.
