This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our students with Varying Exceptionalities love to spend time outdoors playing recreational games, learning hands-on how to grow and produce fruits, vegetables, and beautiful flowers. Teaching the students about Native Plants and our local ecosystems is essential. Our students need time for recreational and educational activities that will help them develop emotionally, intellectually, and socially.

I am a Middle School ESE teacher of students on the Autism Spectrum.

Two years ago I applied for a grant and received funds to start our wonderful garden, which was created by the students, but it requires upkeep and innovative ideas.

Our students love to explore the garden, playing on the swings, walking amongst the flowering plants, listening to the windchimes, and relaxing while socializing with peers and working on personal goals with therapists and teachers.

The materials I have requested are necessary tools and supplies that will allow us to expand the garden and add additional sensory and therapeutic activities. Materials such as wheelbarrows and replacement wheels, a garden shed, and gardening tools are essential to this ongoing project. Garden beds, shepherds hooks, storage benches, and gloves are examples of various garden supplies we need. Our classes participate in planting seeds for our herb gardens, as well as our recycled flower containers. We have many creative ideas but require supplies like paint, to create sidewalk murals, and garden art from recycled materials. We need soil and various rocks for our sensory path and flower beds. Our outdoor swings are a favorite but we need replacements due to weathering and constant use. We would love to display our beautiful flowers within small garden fencing. With these supplies, we can continue to learn and grow in our beautiful therapeutic and recreational garden. We truly appreciate your contributions.
