My Students

We are running out of basic art supplies! On Friday, I counted our last ten glue sticks and last few packs of construction paper. My students love art projects and I love watching them experiment with new textures, scents and color.

I have nine FANTASTIC students who attend a regular public day school in the beautiful state of Virginia.

My students have Autism and significant Intellectual Disabilities. My students love the sensory experiences that come with doing an art project and I love the therapeutic benefits it provides.

My Project

By providing our classroom with the much needed art supplies, my students will be able to have fun, engaging sensory experiences across the curriculum. I have witnessed some spectacular things by incorporating art into our daily class routine. Students with Autism whom previously did not like to get their hands dirty, are now using fingerpaints to create works of art. Students with Downs Syndrome who were unable to spell their own name, are now stamping out their names in a vibrant rainbow of colors! Adding art experiences allows the children time to explore with their senses, sustains attention, and thus creates the possibility for greater skill retention.

By frequently exposing my students to art and encouraging their creativity, whatever it may look like, we are seeing amazing gains in the areas of fine motor skills and sensory tolerance.

But above all, they are having fun while learning!
