It has always been a dream of mine to go into a career that dealt with special effects, movies, acting, and staging. However, that dream of mine was never realized. Teaching in a small, low economically challenged school has been a privilege for me because I have been fortunate enough to work with kids whose dreams have not yet been realized. Not only do I teach, but I also work as the theater program adviser, and I have had a wonderful opportunity to take the program from its meager beginnings in which a handful of people were involved to a program where the kids and the community have something to look forward to every year.
My theater program is growing more and more every year, and I will never grow accustomed to the look of realization on the faces of my students when they have finally recognized their true potential.
Our theater program is truly a gift for the kids in our community who have no other way to express themselves.
My Project
Our school is very small, and our theater budget is limited. With so many organizations in our school trying to raise money, it is difficult for us to do the fundraisers we need to do in order to have a stellar performance. In the past we have borrowed costumes and props from other schools, and we have made our sets out of cardboard boxes the custodians saved for us. To see the students' expressions when someone lends us costumes or props is amazing. They are elated to see such elaborate designs and original costumes, and they get so excited. However, whenever we have to return the items, there is always a sadness. After many weeks of rehearsing and hard work, the theater becomes a home to many, and we all become a small family. We share a bond few will ever share in their lifetime, and every item we use in our performances becomes our treasure. I want to expand our own inventory of costumes.
I want to give back to these students something they can hold on to forever, even when they are at the lowest points in their lives, because what they have endlessly given me goes beyond words.
We have sang together, cried together, laughed together, and rejoiced together. I am grateful I am able to share in their lives. If they really want to pursue a career in theater or film, I want them to see that they have tremendous support. It would mean the world to not only me but also to the students if someone would support our program. These students need a chance to shine. Thank you.
