Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic, curious and eager three to five-year-olds. They are mostly Latino and African American, and most qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Many of my students are English Language Learners, and qualify for free lunch. Our classroom is a blended room, meaning I have a full-time Special Education teacher as a partner in the room, and almost a third of our students have Individual Education Plans, and thus are diverse learners. My students are at a disadvantage due to their lack of resources at home, language challenges, single-parent homes, limited education completed by parents, and experiences outside their community. I love these children and want to help them overcome these challenges.

My Project

These materials will make my preschool students Great Young Authors. The journals will provide them opportunities to express their feelings and experiences in what will be the first in-person schooling for the majority of these children. The small books will allow them to be creative while making their own stories. The pencils are the perfect size for little hands that are still developing and the colored pencils will not only give them the opportunity to draw and color using skin tones, but also provide a great opportunity for discussion about similarities and differences.
