Help me give my students an opportunity to learn a valuable skill, come together to connect and create beautiful and useful things. We will need sets of knitting needles, yarn, and crochet hooks.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are creative and curious about their world. Many of my students' families are struggling financially. I like to knit and crochet. For the past two years, I have been making hats and scarves. I put them in a basket in my classroom. It is labeled, "Need a hat, have a hat. Need a scarf, have a scarf." I encourage my students to take what they need to keep warm on their commute home.
Many of my students are so appreciative and curious how to learn to knit and crochet for themselves.
They have approached me and asked to start a club. I think it's a great idea. We will meet once or twice a week in our classroom to learn the basics. I will also keep a library of knitting and crochet books to give them inspiration. It will be a warm and inviting place for them to learn a skill and spend time with one another.
My Project
We can make magic with the basic crochet hooks, the knitting needle kit, starter yarn and a few books of projects, such as "Contemporary Irish Knits" and the "Knitting Bible". The books, yarn and tools will get us started. Help my students discover the relaxation of learning the age old skills. Help my students develop their attention spans and calm their minds.
We are going to discover the pride of creating clothes and other projects by learning to knit and crochet.
We can only make this happen with your help. The students will come together in our classroom and spend time on a project and learn to use their minds in a new way.
