Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school reside in one of the poorest congressional districts in the United States.

When the last bell of the school day rings at 3:04 pm, most my students head to a part-time job (whose income helps to put food on the table) in the neighborhood or home to take care of younger siblings or elderly relatives.

Rarely does this second shift provide the space or time for creative writing, an activity known to reduce stress, expand imagination, and build literacy.

Fortunately, my students have the opportunity to take a creative writing class during the school day this year. This course provides the time and the space for students to strengthen their writing skills through exercises that ask them to express their thoughts and feelings, reflect on past experiences, consider the perspectives of others, and so much more!

My Project

The students in my creative writing class begin each lesson with a writing prompt. Whether the topic is an observation on an image, the continuation of a first line of a story, or a personal reflection, this daily writing exercise provides a point of entry for students of all ages and abilities while giving them the opportunity to settle their stressors and stimulate their minds.

Using a journal will offer a space where my students can watch their ideas flourish, their skills strengthen, and their confidence grow.

Students will also have the opportunity to decorate the covers--with drawings, pictures, stickers, and the like--so that the notebooks represent their creative potential from the first page to the last.

Having these notebooks will allow my students to watch their ideas accumulate--and their writing skills strengthen!
