My Students

Do you remember walking onto the campus of your elementary school for the very first time? I do! For me, and probably for you too, it was on the first day of kindergarten, but this year for many of my 1st grade students, this is the first time they are entering our campus! Last year many of our kindergarten students stayed at home for the entire year learning virtually, with just a small portion coming back in person for the last couple of months.

My class is filled with 5, 6, and 7 year olds who are looking forward to their first full year of being in class and learning in person with their new teacher and all of their classmates!

Our class is part of a small, public Title 1 elementary school with a large population of second language learners. Although these youngsters come from the same local community, their socioeconomic and multicultural backgrounds are quite varied. One constant they share this year is the need to gain a strong social and academic foundation.

My Project

In addition to helping my students become proficient in language arts and math, this year I am putting more emphasis than ever on developing their social and emotional skills and abilities. I want each student to feel secure in their environment, excited to learn, comfortable with their peers, and proud of what makes them unique.

The colorful draw and write journals and the multicultural crayons will give my students a way to express their feelings and ideas in interesting and creative ways.

They will be able to express themselves and keep a record in one place of how they are growing and changing throughout the year. The writing lines are age appropriate to help them form their letters correctly and form their ideas into complete sentences. The multicultural crayons will allow them to represent themselves and their friends as they see them. One of my favorite parts about 1st grade writing is when the students read and show their writing and drawing to the rest of the class, and their peers give them feedback. These professional looking journals will make that even more exciting for them.

Since we still need to keep as socially distanced as possible in a full class, and limit the sharing of materials, the individual packets of Kleenex, blunt nosed scissors each student can keep in their desk, and individual plastic crayon boxes will help them stay organized and safe. All these supplies will definitely help my students start their year off the "write" way!
