This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Did you ever have a toy that made you ask "why?" and inspire you to explore? Hand boilers have a surprising number of hands-on demonstrations that kids love to do over and over, and best of all, ask why these things are happening.

We are a rural school district in Central Washington.

All three schools are on a single campus, with about four hundred students at the high school. A lot of the students' parents are field laborers with limited proficiency in English. Approximately 80% of our students are Mexican. The vast majority of the students appreciate the value of a good education and work to take advantage of what is being offered to them.

My Project

Kids cannot get enough of these little devices. As a result, they make for fantastic "gateway" demonstrations for laws governing evaporation, sources of pressure, and principles of distillation. For advanced students, labs can be designed to show the kinetic-molecular theory of matter and dynamic equilibrium.

I strongly believe that science is not learning facts in a book.

Science is asking questions about the world we live in. There's no better way to get kids to ask questions than to show them something they don't expect to see, and the hand boilers deliver that.
