My Students

I teach 6th grade students in a culturally diverse community. Some families have rich libraries in their homes, and some have no books at all. Due to the pandemic, my students are at home reading A LOT, but they are craving NEW books. I would love to offer my students some exciting new popular book titles that will not only keep them reading, but will also explore topics surrounding race, diversity, inclusion, and equity.

With remote learning, students are enjoying challenging their classmates to "partner read" and soon they will all be reading in "virtual book clubs" so having a wide variety of new titles will inspire reluctant readers, and spark an interest in EVERY preteen reader in my class.

Despite our Distant Learning environment, my students are becoming a "family", and my goal is to ensure that every child discovers the joy that reading great books can bring to one's life, especially in the current situation. After all they've endured in 2020, my students are excited to get back into a new classroom full of inspiring brand new books! I want to build my library and establish an environment where it is safe to discuss differences and race.

My Project

I always select meaningful and unforgettable picture books, short stories, and novels for my classroom that showcase human diversity. I strive to establish an environment where my students feel safe to discuss differences and race. I encourage students to confront racial and ethnic injustice, and I try to prepare them to live and work together in a diverse world where they will embrace and celebrate differences. Reading is such a powerful way to nurture a child’s sense of curiosity and build a foundation for having conversations about race.

I want my students to have new popular book club choices that will inspire them to have courageous conversations with their classmates about race.

Providing these opportunities for discussion is critical to dismantling racism. When my students read books about people from different backgrounds, they are able to build empathy and better understand people's experiences and perspectives. I want students to speak up with courage and respect when they or someone else has been hurt or wronged by bias. Great books can change lives.
