I teach social studies to approximately 130 6-8 graders at a K-8 school in a high needs, inner city community in Pennsylvania.

Last year, as an English teacher at my school, while discussing current events with my students, I was shocked to discover how many of them neither knew nor cared much about the local, national, and international world around them. In their opinion, the outside world affected them very little, and they felt as though discussing it would be a waste of time. Even those students who did show some interest did not have experience finding reliable sources to give them more information about the world around them.

Today, as the world is becoming increasingly global, students need to know what is going on in their world to be able to think critically about how current events might affect their lives. This year, I will be teaching social studies to many of these same disinterested students, and I want to them to leave my class both with an understanding of the historical forces that have shaped the world we live in as well as the events that are currently making history all around them. A subscription to "Current Events" magazine will make this much easier and more interesting. We will also launch a year-long current events project that will require reports from my students and readings each week on modern events that have their roots in whatever historical event we are studying. One factor in their lack of enthusiasm for current events is my students reading levels in my class. Most of my students read 2 or more years below grade level, and accessing articles in newspapers can be difficult. By having a subscription to this magazine, written just for them, my student's interest in the world around them will increase. This resource will also be a big help to my students on the year long current events projects.

Your donation will make it possible for my students to gain the valuable insight that knowledge of the world around us is not only useful but ultimately a necessity in this day and age. With your help, I hope to make my students valuable citizens of a global world with a thirst for knowledge and the critical thinking skills to know what to do with that knowledge once they have it.
