My Students

Welcome to Room 13, located in urban South Los Angeles! My 4th grade students are energetic, engaging and curious scholars. One of the greatest challenges in such a setting, where resources like technological access is limited, is getting my students to grasp the volume of the world around them.

Having grown up in a similar environment, I understand how limited access to the world can limit learning and appreciation of other cultures.

My Project

South Los Angeles is a very diverse teaching environment. My students come from many different areas of the world, including Belize, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, Guatemala, Mexico and other places where cultures differ. In teaching, I have found that many of the social difficulties my students face are rooted in their lack of exposure to different cultures.

These maps will assist in exposing my students to different cultures, as well as serve for the basis of the academic discourse necessary to help them understand that, although geography separates people of different cultures, we have more similarities than differences.
