This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hi! I am a Special Education teacher working in a self-contained first and second grade classroom. I want my students to be confident and kind school citizens, who always work and try their best. My biggest challenge getting them there is that they are not confident in their skills. I believe in them!

I am working in a self-contained classroom with a group of energetic and eager learners.

Their needs vary from speech disabilities, learning disabilities, and behaviors on the autism spectrum. They are pulled for several different services throughout the day, such as speech, physical therapy, counseling, and ESL. My class consists of 11 boys - all with varying needs. They enjoy using manipulatives and visuals in order for them to find success. My school is in a high needs area of Queens and consists of many students where English is not their first language. Four of my students fall under this category, and receive ESL services.

My Project

My students would use the iPads in order to access online resources for our Literacy Program. A few of my students struggle immensely with isolating phonemes and identifying letters and sounds. I would use the technology of the iPads to allow them to access websites and activities that can help them practice these skills more independently and find success. I would also allow for students to watch certain videos or view online content in order to strengthen their learning.

These donations to this project would improve my classroom immensely because I would be able to give my students an opportunity to explore and practice activities independently.

The iPads would allow for my most insecure students to practice concepts independently and find success on their own. Many of my students are required to complete a task and the iPads would allow for them to work more independently. They need to practice the material and feel good about themselves!
