My scholars are an eager and creative group of 9 & 10-year-olds. We live in a very rural area of Northern NY, with a high poverty rate. Our town is very isolated from metropolitan areas, and we lack opportunities for cultural enrichment and diversity. Despite these challenges, my scholars are still creative dreamers with vivid imaginations. My goal is to help them capture their ideas in essays, stories and journals, and also encourage an appreciation of the written word. It is possible the next Ernest Hemingway, Patricia Polacco, or Shel Silverstein is sitting among my scholars, with a wonderful story to tell.
My Project
These materials will inspire and encourage my scholars explore, practice and take risks with their writing. The books chosen for this project promote self-expression and the art of storytelling. They focus on skills like using figurative language, visualization and generating topics. I’ve also chosen a set of flair pens for this project that scholars LOVE to use. These pens not only add color to any written piece, but they are also very handy during the editing process. Scholars will be motivated to revise their writing with these smooth, non-threatening colors. Finally, the writing journals will be a terrific place for students to capture their stories.
