My Project

I have an amazing group of students who mostly come from low income families of color. English is not their native language. Although they easily and freely talk to each other, but using English in an academic setting is a whole new ball game for them and they struggle.

I would like to incorporate reading in my Math/ Science class to make connections between the core content and reading comprehension.

If I have a class set of non-fiction books that incorporate Math and Science in the story, we could set aside a few minutes each day to read during the class and work on strengthening reading comprehension skills as well as skills such as paraphrasing, summarizing, making inferences, and making predictions which will ultimately play into science. When students are asked to read a Science related fictional text and answer questions about it, many of these skills are extremely crucial for them.

I believe that the more connections students can make between the different core content areas, the more they will be able to see how useful each skill is in connection to the other skills and in other content areas.

Mrs. Simonian will only receive her materials if this project is fully funded by August 8.
