My Project

Social and emotional learning (SEL) continues to be an important part of education and human development. The main outcome of social and emotional learning is for students to learn how to establish and maintain healthy relationships in an environment that is safe and positive. Educators are now faced with the task of teaching SEL skills and strategies to students of all ages.

The most important skill students can develop and build upon through various experiences is self-efficacy.

Having confidence in themselves is important and having self-efficacy allows students to problem solve on their own. It is important for students to be in control of their emotions. In order for this to happen, students need to be self aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Once recognized, students will begin to understand how those traits can affect their personal relationships.

Deciphering thoughts and feelings through conversations, self assessment, and calming strategies continue to play important factors in dealing with SEL.

Providing a calming space while having the necessary tools such as flexible seating, sensory objects, and conversation starters will allow students to establish and maintain healthy relationships, be in control of their emotions and encourage self-awareness. There is always an added plus knowing there is a place to complete work in a comfortable safe space when needed.
