I'm a firm believer in keeping the focus on what is really important. That is students and their learning. Whenever possible, I stop by Starbucks on college campuses because it is where you see students in their natural element: learning, communicating, and experiencing. Imagine that for elementary kids!
We strive for hands-on, real-world experiences to instill important life lessons.
Our classroom isn't about pencils, paper, and tests to learn!
You might think that a school within walking distance of the world's most beautiful beaches has everything it needs. However, a majority of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. As a tourist community, a lot of our parents have seasonal jobs, and things get tight during the off-season. That doesn't stop our students from aiming high. We are a "Leader in Me" school, so we set and track goals weekly. We live by the 8 Habits. Our students have ambitious goals, and their aspirations will stop the cycle of generational poverty. We have future astronauts, presidents, and doctors. As a smaller school, we know most of our students so we're able to hit the ground running on day one of the new school year.
My Project
Four months after Hurricane Michael all but wiped our tourist town off the map, our administrator sent a group of eight teachers to "Get Your Teach On" -- an incredible conference devoted to student engagement. We came back ready to bring some normalcy back to our students, but with a level of engagement they had never seen!
This classroom transformation takes the students to Hogwarts, and the decor and props will allow them to experience Quidditch, and Hagrid and his magical creatures, and the wonder of Diagon Alley.
We will turn our classroom into the dungeons and secret passages and enchanted forest of the wizarding world. Our learning will involve mystery problem-based learning, magical task cards, and a sorting hat that chooses our collaborative groups for the week. This project is an assortment of decorations selected to transform and take the students on a journey of broomsticks and wands and butterbeer. Studies show that students learn more when they are engaged, and classroom transformations are a growing way to get students more enthusiastic about school.
