I am a Teach For America alum currently in my fifth year of teaching. I teach fourth grade in a low-income, probationary school in the West Englewood neighborhood of Chicago.
I am always looking for supplemental reading materials because the basal reader my school provides is designed for English Language Learners and is two years below grade level. This is far from ideal for my African-American students.
I am hoping to receive a class set of "The Witches" by Roald Dahl. I've used this book previously as a "read aloud", and students have absolutely LOVED it! This year, I want each of the students to have access to a copy so we can use our reading strategies to comprehend a high-interest novel.
