Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach at the Fordham High School for the Arts in Bronx, NY. My students see me daily for theater classes from the 10th grade, through the 12th grade. All of them have selected drama as a three-year major track. Recently, my students attended some theater conferences and workshops with students from other schools in New York City, and in New York State. They have unanimously asked to upgrade their vocabulary. They felt that students, in similar grades, from other schools are using higher level vocabulary than they use. They also expressed concern that students from other schools were able to read aloud swiftly, with no hesitation, and that they could not keep up with these peers in the workshops. My students are concerned about competing for college placement, and their ability to read aloud flawlessly in the world of theater auditions. Many of them plan to go to college with a theater program. The students grouped together in a meeting to ask if I could help enhance their vocabulary skills during the upcoming school year during the drama classes I teach. I plan to have dictionaries available to all students to immediately look up any word they come across in reading plays, biographies of theater personalities, and/or technical theater and theater history material. We will have a word wall that they will maintain and will incorporate into their daily use. We will use the Thesaurus to introduce new words in our improvisational exercises, and in our playwriting activities. When my students proposed using drama class to upgrade their vocabulary, I realized the power that we hold as collaborators to better our language and our literacy!
