My Students

Do you know how difficult it is to have monthly bake sales to purchase new, or replace, old, broken and worn out science lab equipment? Virtual labs with immediate post tests provide students instant feedback on where they preformed the lab correctly and where they went awry.

I teach secondary school biology and life science to a multi-ethnic population of students.

Though lots of my students enter middle and high school with a desire to attend a 4-year college or university, by the time they graduate, many have become sidetracked or settle for alternate choices. When my students are provided with opportunities to use computer technology to solidify their in class experiences it inspires them to stay focused and motivated. This not only augments labs we do in class but builds their confidence to want to continue to pursue their science education beyond graduation.

My Project

My students will be able to integrate their knowledge of computer games with simulated lab experiences in science. I am requesting a site license for computer software in the Biological sciences skills and content Test Preparation. This will enable them to look at the computer as a tool for explore science and technology advancements online in the future. Also, when students explore science interactively and independently they learn to build their self confidence. This also gives them much reinforcement and test practice which will help them expand their college opportunities.

What can this do for the students now?

Plenty! First off it will give them an opportunity to utilize our schools computer lab with software designed specifically to increase their knowledge of biology. Next, it will give them a chance to break the routine of lecture, discussion and small group lab work. Finally, this software lends themselves to collaborative discussion between students that fosters their developmental social needs & positive interaction surrounding science scholarship.
