Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Sensory spaces can be really beneficial for students, especially those with sensory processing issues, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, depression, or anxiety. These areas are designed to provide a calm, structured environment that helps students regulate their sensory input and emotions. The Uptown Cozy Corner supports WHEELS lower grade school students in the following ways:

Regulation of Sensory Input: The Uptown Cozy Corner provide a space where young students can experience calming sensory stimuli like textured objects such as a hammock swing chair and lush toys.

These textures help students who may be overwhelmed by too much sensory input in a typical classroom.

Emotional Regulation: Many students struggle with emotional outbursts, stress, or frustration. The Uptown Cozy Corner allows lower grade students to step away from their classroom environment and engage with calming activities such as those mentioned in the Social-Emotional Learning for Autistic Kids and Emotional Regulation activity books to regulate their emotions, reducing anxiety and improving focus.

Improved Focus and Attention: For students with ADHD or other attention-related challenges, sensory rooms can help them “reset” by offering a quiet, soothing space with various social skills books, snacks and a cold drink from a mini fridge where they can recharge and improve focus once they return to class.

By providing a place for students to de-escalate, the Uptown Cozy Corner helps reduce instances of disruptive or challenging behaviors, leading to a more positive school experience overall.
