My students need a MacBook Air computer to create and edit work. We need to be able to burn DVDs so we can show projects. Students love to read, be creative, write scripts, act and use technology. I want the library to be a place where they can incorporate the arts and reading!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Title I school with approximately 450 students.

Our students range from low to middle income. The majority of our students are new to this country or have parents that are new to the United States. The school was built in the 1950's and has very little technological resources. As the Media Specialist, I want to encourage students to use technology and highlight the fantastic titles we have available in our Media Center. Most of our students love to read and come to the library at least twice a week. I need these students to share some of their favorite books with the school, and in turn encourage others to read.

My Project

We will create short movies/clips. Students will be able to use the computers to edit work. I have requested a computer/laptop. I would like for the students to meet in groups of 3-4 according to their favorite book or author. I want them to promote their favorite book by creating a short clip. They will first have to write a summary of their book, then share some of the important details without giving the book away. They will edit, produce, and act! Students will develop a script, learn how to use different camera angles, camera moves, set up props or costumes. The "crew" will then shoot the commercial. After the movie is complete, students will learn to edit and assemble the commercial and finally adding some music. The laptop is small enough yet versatile enough to complete all these tasks. It is user friendly and easy to teach students how to use its features.

The library needs to stay relevant.

In a time where students are drawn to technology I need to find a way to incorporate the arts and reading into technology. I think this idea is great for all students because it allows them to express and engage all modalities of learning. I think this would be great for my students because they are growing adults and if I can foster their creativity now, I know I will be opening the doors to a world of knowledge.
