Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We hope to use a drum circle as an extracurricular club to teach students the art of listening, repeating, creating and synthesizing.

We start with a simple, steady beat that is attainable for everyone-a beat similar to the drum within each of us- our heartbeat.

From there, a brave student is asked to diverge and play a beat that is different but sounds right with the one already being played. Once the two rhythms are solidly holding, a third drummer will pause, listen, and come in with a compatible sound of their own. One by one, students who wish can add their unique sound to the music. Before we know it, we have something beautiful, original, and unifying. Through the music, we have become one.

We also use echos. These are fun and effective in drum circles and give the opportunity for us to listen and repeat what was said.

Learning to listen and "play along" with others are skills necessary for success in almost every setting that we find ourselves in on a daily basis- whether it be with family, friends, school, or the workplace. These skills make success in a variety of settings possible by fostering openness, mindfulness, diversity, and unity.
