Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students reside in one of the poorest congressional districts in the country, and the pandemic has had a particularly severe impact on their community. While schools in New York City were open for hybrid learning this fall, they closed abruptly in mid-November once the city's infection rate reached a certain threshold. Currently, all students are learning from home, and teachers are delivering instruction remotely to all students; this arrangement will continue until further notice.

Despite the inherent limitations of remote schooling, the students at my school still demonstrate a voracious appetite for learning!

Although the era of distance learning runs the risk of widening the achievement gap, my colleagues and I begin each day with the goal of narrowing this disparity by creating informative and interactive lessons that attempt to engage students through a combination of course content and online tools. The dismissal bell might go unheard these days, but students spend their after-school hours by continuing what they were doing pre-pandemic:

attending tutoring; participating in clubs, jobs, and internships; and supplementing their coursework with opportunities for academic opportunities.

My Project

My students recently completed a unit on the relationship between the United States and Japan during World War II. Specifically, students began by learning about the dropping of atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively, before studying the events preceding and following the bombings.

The overarching question for the unit was whether or not the United States made the right decision to deploy atomic weapons as a form of warfare.

While attempting to answer this question, two of the events students learned about were the damage and destruction--as well as the ensuing radiation poisoning--caused by the bombs and the treatment of U.S. soldiers who were detained in Japanese Prisoner of War (POW) camps. These experiences are chronicled in literature, and students will continue their exploration of an answer to the unit's overarching question by reading Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken and Eleanor Coerr's Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Students will receive copies of the books in the mail, and once our school re-opens for in-person learning, copies will be redistributed to additional students so that they, too, can read narrative accounts of the effects of war.
