My Project

Following remote learning, many of my amazing, creative students became used to socializing online. They've developed many new friendships and skills through online gaming, and I want to help facilitate these skills and allow them to transition to in-person social skills. My fifth graders are especially excited for this project, as they are developing the essential social skills needed to transition to middle school.

Minecraft is an amazing platform that allows students to work together and develop important problem solving and executive functioning skills.

Minecraft for Education is program we have access to that has specific social emotional lessons that have proven to be so helpful for our students. The program contains specific games where students will be able to work on targeted social emotional skills such as empathy, affect regulation, kindness, making positive decisions, mindfulness, and self awareness. In addition, it helps to develop problem solving and other organizational skills by playing together within existing counseling groups. My fifth graders are planning a club to develop these skills with their peers, as well as to mentor younger students and teach them these skills themselves. The iPads will allow each student to access the game through their own accounts, while still being able to play together within the virtual world and physically together in a safe space. Beyond the Minecraft club, my students will additionally be able to utilize the ipads individually when needed (to work on school assignments, continue working on coping skills, improve executive functioning skills), rather than having to share the existing tablet. While my students are great at sharing, our relatively short sessions make it difficult to complete tasks, switch accounts, and create equal time!
