My Students

My school has been focusing on encouraging students with talents in the Visual and Performing Arts. Currently, we have an Art Colony that encourages students to develop their drawing skills. We want to expand and encourage students with musical talents. Last year, we introduced ukuleles into a 4th grade classroom. We want to start an After-School Program, The Ukulele Circle, for 10 students.

Learning how to play the ukulele will give students with musical talents an outlet to express their feelings and their creativity.

Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, in a primarily working class, inner-city neighborhood, our students may not have the resources to take music lessons. Coming from families where parents may be working multiple jobs and struggling to meet everyday needs, our students may not have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument at home.

I hope that, while learning to play the ukulele, our students will be empowered to develop their talent into a lifelong passion. Learning to create music on a ukulele will also help these students stay motivated, persist, and, hopefully, enjoy learning.

My Project

Learning to play the ukulele will encourage our students to develop their musical talents. It will provide them with the basics skills necessary to read music and play songs. It will help them learn persistence and develop grit.

And, it will give them an outlet to express their feelings and creativity.

All of these are transferable skills that will impact their classroom engagement. Hopefully, the students will see how practice will increase their proficiency in any area. What they learn in music, will also impact their math, reading, writing, and language arts development.
