Our room is home to a wonderful group of inviting and considerate first grade students. We have created a home away from home, where everyone is greeted each day with a handshake and a smile. This is a tradition that the first graders began themselves after hearing the teacher read aloud "A Teacher for Bear" by Anne Marie Price. The students are always welcoming and charming.
Entering our room, you will feel an air of tranquility and peace surrounding you.
You will hear quiet music playing, and scattered throughout the room you will see students engaged in academic tasks like reading to self, reading to a buddy, working on writing, writing with a partner, or completing word work to help become a better speller. You will see students working on math by myself or math with a buddy, practicing their math facts, or writing about math. You will see scientists engaged in scientific inquiry, asking questions, forming hypothesis, and conducting experiments.
My Project
First grade students learn and grow so much in first grade. It is unbelievable the growth students make during this time! Students start first grade reading the pictures and end the year as strong, successful, independent readers who can power through any tricky word. First grade is the foundation upon which academic growth and development begins.
Picture this: upon entering the classroom, you see children scattered throughout the room and engaged in differentiated, hands-on academic work and skills.
You look around and feel the calm aura of the classroom and find the teacher situated with a small group sitting at a horseshoe table, easily able to reach the books and manipulatives placed in front of each child. The teacher is able to direct students as they work through their tricky word strategies and work on flexible thinking and application with math skills. All of this is done with students sitting nearby, within arms reach of the teacher, promoting student learning and growth as they move through to the zone of proximal development.
