Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

With This project, I hope to teach my students about the cultural significance of the Lunar New Year and the tradition of giving red envelopes. Students will learn about themes of generosity, prosperity, family, and cultural traditions.

My 11th grade special education language arts students will gain an understanding about the Lunar New Year through short stories and videos, as well as through classroom decorations and red envelopes.

We will discuss the red envelope tradition as well as the myth behind it. Students will learn that the red envelopes symbolize good luck and prosperity, and they typically contain money.

As most of my students are from Hispanic families, we will compare and contrast this tradition to similar customs they celebrate. We will then do a deep dive into other cultural traditions celebrated around the world and research the symbolism each has, and how they're all tied to good wishes, family bonds, and cultural heritage.

The project will close with a creative writing assignment about giving or receiving a red envelope during the Lunar New Year.
