My Students

One of my favorite quotes comes from Dr. Seuss, best known for authoring stories like The Cat in The Hat and many others: "Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away!" As a teacher, I am in awe every day with the way my students think, wonder, and respond to situations that arise in their daily lives.

Our school is culturally diverse, and our classroom is filled with differences; yet we have one thing in common, we are a close family.

We value these differences and see the opportunity to learn from all of our backgrounds and experiences. As in the story of "Oh, The Places You'll Go," we have made friendships with others who are on their own adventures. We will continue to connect with those in our school, our community, and globally. On our adventures, true friendships will form, and we will become a closer school family. Literature and art helps unite us, inspire us, and develop a love for adventures and the new places we'll go.

My Project

Our school focuses on 7 main character traits, and one of those is tolerance. Throughout the school year, I teach many lessons focused around these 7 character traits, and have purchased books that compliment these virtues. Having more books that encourage Tolerance and demonstrate this trait, to use as read alouds or in small book clubs, will help my students see that differences can empower and unite us. With the books I have chosen, my 2nd graders will be exposed to more diverse examples of kids as leaders, role models, and examples of how their different backgrounds and challenges can create change in our thinking and in our world. Picture books are a powerful way to convey a message through illustrations and text, and will be able to reach many of my English Learners. I am excited to create experiences for all of my students, using the books I have selected, and the discussion that will come from these books will not only empower us as thinkers, but as readers, writers, and humans.

As the Dalai Lama states "Compassion and tolerance are not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength."

Having my students learn about kids from different backgrounds, or who experience challenges that are different from their own, will help them make connections and become more culturally responsive, compassionate, and tolerant human beings.
