Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some one once said that if mystery novels were written like science books, the murder would not appear until the last page. Instead, the reader would be treated to a procession of facts without knowing why they should care. This book is not like that.

We are a rural school district in Central Washington.

All three schools are on a single campus, with about four hundred students at the high school. A lot of the students' parents are field laborers with limited proficiency in English. The percentage of students who qualify for free lunch is so high that it is cheaper to give all students free lunch than track the money from the ones who do not qualify. Approximately 80% of our students are Mexican. The vast majority of the students appreciate the value of a good education and work to take advantage of what is being offered to them. They benefit immensely from hands on activities.

My Project

Joy Hakim's "Story of Science" is an incredible book. It makes science and the problems it addresses come alive. It gives context to the questions that are addressed in science class and shows students why they should care. The books are very readable and engaging. With these books, I will be able to help my students learn the human element of science, and that science is a dynamic process, not a body of facts to be memorized. They will be introduced to great thinkers and great puzzles of history--things that are usually left out of a curriculum.

This project will let my students learn things that are not taught in traditional textbooks and help them instill a sense of wonder about the universe and their place in it.

They will learn new ways that science is engaging and relevant to their lives, and they will have an appreciation for the work done by the great thinkers of the past.
