My students need materials to conduct exit polls for the upcoming presidential election. They need clipboards, pencils, a sturdy electric pencil sharpener, etc.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This fall, my statistics students are going to conduct exit polls on election day all across Kings County (Brooklyn). In addition to learning about designing and implementing surveys and collected data, my students will take part in a lesson in civics that will stay with them forever.
My students are enthusiastic learners who love to ask "how does math apply to the real world"- this project is right up their alley!
My school is 75% Hispanic, which is the most sought out vote by this year's candidates. It was only in 1990 that the Hispanic demographic question was asked on the Census, and now they are the fastest growing, and most influential, electorate group.
My students are overwhelmingly first generation college goers and often serve as the cultural translators for their immigrant parents. Through this project, they will take an active role in an election they are too young to vote in and will return home to their communities in the evening to raise awareness about the election and the importance of participation.
My Project
At 17 polling sites across Brooklyn, my students will sit outside and politely approach every third (or every fourth, depending on voter traffic) and ask them to take an exit poll that they will design.
Mid-day, they will tally up their results and compare the demographics of their sample to the demographics of the Assembly District they are in and make a plan to have their sample better reflect the community.
That evening, as they watch the results come in, they will feel that they are part of it. For the remainder of the year, we will use the data they have collected as we travel through the units of AP Statistics and they will remember this experience for the rest of their lives.
I am requesting organizational materials such as clipboards, stapler, pencils and a sturdy electric pencil sharpener that will make this day run more smoothly.
There is no better way to GET OUT THE VOTE than by empowering teenagers!
Teenage enthusiasm is contagious! A recent New York Times OpEd "Is Algebra Necessary," Andrew Hacker highlighted the importance of students having a "greater understanding of where various numbers come from, and what they actually convey" and made a call for classes that focus on "citizen statisticians."
This project is scheduled to start at the beginning of the year, so please donate soon if you are ab
