My Students

My students are gifted, enthusiastic kids who thrive when given the opportunity to be creative. They have already assigned roles in their teams and started conducting research. One team has contacted a librarian in Kansas City who is an expert on this unsolved murder case from the 1930's that the students are using as a basis for their "nutshell." Another team has decided to create an arson scene, and have already consulted with the AP Chemistry teacher about safely burning materials in the fume hood to make realistic debris. "The Slick Sleuthers" will be digging through historical archives in order to recreate a murder scene at the Worlds Fair, committed by the infamous H.H. Holmes.

While we have building materials available in our maker space, the decorative elements, such as dollhouse furniture, must be purchased.

Your contribution will help make our Nutshells more realistic and detailed.

My Project

The students will be using these materials to build miniature death scenes, inspired by Frances Glessner Lee's Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death. They will collaborate in teams to apply their knowledge of forensic science, creating a "mystery" for observers to solve. The students will research their case, interview experts, design the scene in CAD, build and decorate the scene in the maker space, and create a mini-documentary on the process in their film class.

Projects will be displayed in a school-wide gallery walk this June, in which faculty and students alike try to "solve the case." Each student in the class will bring a minimum of three guests to the gallery walk.

Additionally, next year's forensic science class will be assigned to interpret and sketch the miniature crime scenes as part of the crime scene processing lab.
