Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

William Shakespeare wrote, “Suit the action to the word, the word to action." When performing we should live up to the words we speak, and as educators we should do the same. I teach Theatre at a KIPP College Prep charter school, a Senior High School with a starting freshman class of about 160. That is 160 promises to give them the best theatre arts education possible.

Many of my students have a limited exposure to theatre as patrons, and even less as performers. It's important to me to give my students a venue to perform, a stage to present the talents they have and the work they achieve in drama class. Currently we share our building's theatre with two other resident schools. This means that our students are not given a chance to regularly perform on a stage. I would love to give my budding actors an actual stage to put on their student productions. A stage would turn my classroom into a performance space and give my students a sense that the work that they are doing in class is valuable, worthy of presentation.

In addition to the riser, I would love to eventually have a lighting and sound system in place so that our productions will have a level of professionalism that stands out amongst other schools. Having a classroom stage is a first step in creating a collegiate drama program at KIPP.

You will make it possible for my students to stand on their first stage and let their voices be heard. Let this be the first of many stages my kids stand on. Let this stage open their hearts and minds to theatre, so that they can experience the transformative power it has to offer.
