Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each day, our teen zoologists enter our school, eat breakfast and hop on a school bus to learn about animal conservation. The zoo is their classroom. Students study in the same sun-filled, humid environment of the animals they are observing. Their passion is evolving into their purpose.

Our school is home of a stellar science/zoology magnet program.

It is recognized as a national merit award winner by the Magnet Schools of America. Thirty percent of the students are in the science/zoo magnet program. Additionally, these phenomenal students take advanced mathematics classes such as algebra and geometry. It is no surprise that last school year, these students overwhelmingly passed the district and state science and civics end of the year exams. Our school is located in the southern part of Florida serving over 600 students. Approximately seventy-five percent receive free or reduced lunch. Most, if not all, of the investigative research is done outdoors. Students learn in a variety of ways. This includes expeditions to the Florida Keys to swim with marine life at the Theater of the Sea, as well as travel to Washington, D.C. to visit the National Zoo.

My Project

My students need life essential items like sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and hats to protect themselves from the environment while researching zoological science. The outdoors is their classroom. Before students set out for zoo walks, instructors ask students to apply sunscreen, mosquito repellent, put on sunglasses and a hat. Zoological studies are shaped by scientific methods that include investigative research in animal behavior and adaptations. Students spend time observing how animals react to challenges and predators. This type of research may require some time in the hot, humid weather. As the sun bears down on their rosy cheeks, students are filled with excitement after spending the morning feeding giraffes, observing the habitat of a family of hyenas, or learning why some animals are nocturnal.

Our science/zoo magnet's program goal is to maintain the health and safety of our students while they are outside observing and researching.

We want to transform students who have a natural affinity for animals and their care, into citizens with discriminating minds and informed problem solving and critical thinking skills, who will ultimately become environmentalists, conservationist, preservationists, ecologists, research scientists and stewards of our planet and its natural resources.
