My Students

"Life is one grand, sweet song, so start the music." ~Ronald Reagan. Let's get my 3rd grade students on their way to playing beautiful music.

I teach a class of third grade gifted/high achieving students in a large urban school district.

Our school is in a low socioeconomic area of the city. We are a Title 1 school meaning that most students qualify for free or reduced lunch subsidized by the federal government. Many students are dropped off at school around 7:30 am and some aren't picked up until 6 pm.

My Project

Since funding for the arts is usually the first to be cut, the students at my school haven't had an opportunity to participate in an instrumental music program for the past 4 years. With the purchase of the recorders and music books, my students will learn how to play and read music. The students will perform a concert for their parents, family, and peers at the end of the school year. At first, it will be a challenge for the students. They will learn that in order to accomplish the goal of playing music, practice and focus is important. They will need to listen to the others in order to play in unison. This is an important skill and should transfer into their everyday class focus in other subjects. Fortunately for my students, I know how to play instruments and read music. Therefore, I can teach them and share my experiences in music with them.

Research shows that students who learn how to play an instrument and read music score higher on standardized tests in Mathematics.

Students lives will change especially if they have an aptitude for music. As they continue through school, they will have the foundation to learn other instruments. They will be able to join band in middle and high school. As a member of the band, students build special friendships that last a lifetime.
