Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
What if the one of the ways you learned was through using patterns, pictures or objects? Some children on the autism spectrum think, learn, and organize information this way.
The majority of my truly amazing students are diagnosed with autism and also face the challenges of coming from a disadvantaged socioeconomic background.
They have a wide range of abilities in their social, cognitive, and language skills and need certain modifications to ensure that they have a balanced instructional program with functional and academic rigor.
This year my class consists of 6 amazing students who will be learning remotely this year. They are visual-kinesthetic learners and learn best when they have access to motivating visual support and hands on materials. Learning over a screen has it's challenges, but through creativity and teamwork, my students will continue to persevere and overcome obstacles that may try to stand in their way!
My Project
Spring is in the air and growing a garden will help bring the outdoors into the homes of my fully remote students. Social emotional learning is critical for my students with autism who have difficulty understanding and expressing emotions and engaging in communicative exchanges. Although growing gardens naturally lend themselves to math and science activities, they also support a myriad of social emotional learning opportunities.
The trials and tribulations of growing a vegetable garden teaches communication, decision making, self and social awareness skills.
My students will learn about self-management and responsible decision-making by tending to and waiting for their gardens to grow over a period of several weeks. They will keep an individualized journal that monitors plant growth in addition to how they feel about their garden’s progress. Students with blossoming gardens will be emboldened to identify and express feelings of pride and happiness. They will be encouraged to describe and share their weekly success with their peers. In turn, they will also use social scripts to demonstrate empathy and respect for peers who may not have had a successful week. Students with unsuccessful gardens may experience feelings of sadness and disappointment. They will learn how to persevere through a bad growth week by problem solving using thinking maps.
The ultimate reward of the fruits of their labor will be using the veggies grown to make a unique dish for a food themed class party. Each student will work on communication skills by demonstrating and giving directions to a recipe they invented for all their peers to recreate and taste. After a taste test, the students will provide constructive criticism and/or positive feedback. If all the gardens fail, there is always pretend play food as a back-up. Although, that would be for my students to problem solve.
