My Project

My middle school English Learners have been reading, acting, reciting, and, most of all, enjoying the trials and tribulations of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Talk about outrageous fortune! Although we often work from adapted scripts to begin with, my students are more and more comfortable performing in class using scripts based on Shakespeare's original language. It has been amazing to watch them develop their acting ability, vocabulary, and understanding of human nature as we explore Hamlet's story together.

I am requesting sets of two different graphic novel adaptations of Hamlet for my students to read to help flesh out the story between the scenes we are exploring together in depth in class.

Graphic novels are appealing to my students and support understanding of challenging vocabulary and archaic language forms. Having sets of these books will allow students to use them in groups to complete an array of assignments together.

Reading challenging texts like Shakespeare's Hamlet is important for all students, including English Learners like the students in my classroom. We cannot wait until students have complete mastery of the English language before we introduce rich thinking and rigor to instruction. Please help me make sure my students have the same opportunities to become strong thinkers, readers, and writers as all other students. Equity matters.
