My Students

Elementary school is such an exciting time where students enter with a variety of interests, skills, and goals. My school is located in a neighborhood where many of the students are from a variety of cultures and speak other languages. Students and families have a lot to offer each other and are eager to immerse themselves in the culture of school and community. Some of my students are just learning to hold a pencil, write, read, and count, some are mastering higher level skills, and still others are trying to build upon their individual interests and use their creativity in areas such as acting, singing, dancing, sewing, gardening, painting, etc.

In this class, we celebrate the joy we get from learning, the character building and friendship we get from building community, and the fulfillment we get from celebrating our individuality.

As a teacher, these are three of my most important goals and I believe them to be building blocks for life.

My Project

Everyone loves learning something fun, new, and exciting. Kids love when schools engage them academically, socially, and personally. This is especially so when they are allowed to have an active voice in choosing what they would like to learn, especially if it also offers them a chance to learn a new skill.

Our Sewing Enrichment program engages students in all ways!

In this enrichment program, students will be using their creativity…learning to hand sew, sew with a machine, knit, make craft projects etc. Their products will then be sold to other students, families, and the community. All ‘profits’ will then be reinvested in the school and community. The students will become entrepreneurs, giving back to their school and community. The school has become more than academics, and I have never seen more excited energy than I have witnessed in just our first session of our project
