A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students have diverse special needs that require a moderate to high level of individualized instruction in addition to supported opportunities for academic and social inclusion or mainstreaming. I am responsible for K-5th grade students, but the majority of my students during the 2016-17 school year will be in Kindergarten.
My students with autism are in need of an environmental supports that promote sensory integration and reduce meltdowns that interfere with learning.
This will be the first time that the majority of the students also have autism. I want to build a sensory friendly classroom to promote student success.
My Project
Flexible seating can provide clear boundaries for personal space, especially for students who struggle with self regulation during whole group instruction. The Big Joe Fabric Chairs will be perfect for Morning Circle & Calendar. They will also be used for and for Rest Time or anytime an individual student may need a break.
Providing a few different flexible seating options will reduce sensory meltdowns and promote student engagement.
The various seating options can provide an opportunity for additional sensory input or a reduction of input. The Stay-N-Play balls will provide an opportunity to wiggle during academic tasks that require a higher level of focus.
Using different seating for different stations in the classroom will also provide a visual clue to what is expected from the student. Each learning space will be set up with visual cues, unique to that particular learning station.
