Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Being a teenager in New York City is stressful, especially for my students. Some students like Xavier have to work. Another student D'Asiah, has a 9 month old daughter and so she's juggling so much for her new family. All of my students need help developing healthy ways to cope with stress.

One day during seminar, students were discussing things that keep them from doing their best in school and in life. Despite diverse social, economic, and cultural differences, all students agreed that the stress of transitioning into adult life makes it difficult to perform well in school, and leaves them feeling overwhelmed. This inspired the idea to create an intensive class to teach students about the physical and psychological effects of stress and ways to manage stress.

Learning to cope with stress will help students remain focused, healthy, happy and productive throughout their academic and professional lives. By teaching about different mindfulness practices, nutrition, meditation, and yoga techniques, students will be able to identify and cope with stress in an individualized way. Group warm-up activities and partner work will help students learn to express themselves peacefully and manage conflicts between people. This is very important, as many students feel unable to resolve conflicts at home and in other social settings.

In Their Own Words

By hosting a creative stress management intensive, students will be provided with tools to cope with stress and information about the science of stress to help them become healthy adults. Through various field trips, exercises and lessons from professional instructors, students will learn about yoga and meditation, mindfulness skills, guided meditations, and other techniques to help them manage stress in groups and independently.

I plan on practicing stress-relief techniques that I learn during my intensive during times that I am overwhelmed by schoolwork and other pressures. I hope to apply what I learn in group activities to my relationship with my mother, when trying to express myself to her in moments of tension. I would like to practice the yoga and guided meditation techniques I will learn about with friends!

Stress is inevitable, and can be detrimental to all aspects of life if not dealt with mindfully. I think at an age where many of us are developing, it is important to learn to deal with stress so as not to let it negatively affect our school lives, or psychological and emotional health, or our social interactions. Many students are not taught about this in the home and it can cause them many difficulties in life that would have been avoidable if they had been taught to manage strong emotions.
