“Every Child Deserves A Special Education” is the motto of the Discovery Program, a hands-on and minds-on classroom that serves 30 K-2 students with abilities covering the full spectrum of abilities. In this unique learning environment, general and special educators co-teach and individualize instruction for every child. Having a wide range of reading materials is imperative to meet the myriad of needs in our classroom. Additionally, providing science related material our early readers can handle is extremely important. Connecting science and literacy instruction at the level best suited for our emerging readers is the purpose of this project. Each child’s reading ability will be assessed and the appropriate leveled reader will be assigned. Each child will meet daily with one of the teachers for lessons designed to increase reading and comprehension abilities. Having the 30 different K-2 level readers in the Science Literacy Center Kit 1 available will enable each child to work in a high interest reader geared for their individual level. Your support of the cross-curricular “Science and Literacy Connection Part 2” project will increase early reading and science skills because we will have the books needed to individualize instruction for each of our students.
