Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I plan to use this donation to beautify my counseling office by hanging curtains, using soft lighting, and offering comfy seating to create a cozy atmosphere. M students can draw or play with kinetic sand as they meet with me for counseling sessions.

My office is not soundproof as a window does not close entirely between my office and the chemistry room.

I often ask my students to keep their voices down, even when crying over a personal problem or struggling to regulate their emotions. Students usually share vulnerable details of their home lives or personal struggles. They should be able to share in a safe and comfortable environment without worrying that their classmates are over-hearing their conversation in the next room. Eating a safe space for students gives them an outlet and makes them feel more successful in other areas of the day.

Many of my students struggle with housing insecurity and food insecurity or come from homes where families struggle with domestic violence, addiction, or parental incarceration. Despite these challenges, my student SHOW UP! They have taught me so much about the strength of the human spirit over the years. I am in awe of them every day!
