My Students

I am an ELA co-teacher in a diverse middle school in Brooklyn, New York. Our 6th grade ICT ELA classroom is a place where all students can learn. We focus on many different skills to enhance students' writing. Students' writing is enhanced through working actively with texts.

To help students thrive, one of the main strategies we teach is close reading.

As close readers, students annotate, write gist notes, make inferences, scan the structure of the text, cite textual evidence, and so much more. These reading strategies help students absorb and remember what they are reading. This helps them become better writers. As students track their work, they are able to see improvements in their reading comprehension and writing responses.

My Project

I am looking for books that are appropriate for middle school age students. My students are required to participate in a 25 book campaign. The students are responsible for reading 25 books from September to June. These books are to be read independently and can be anything of interest to them. A book report is required for each of the 25 books that they read.

I am currently looking for more of a variety of books to add to our classroom library.

Our classroom library currently has books, however, some are not appealing to the students. I am looking for more variety, something current, and age appropriate. The students are interested in anything from fiction, non-fiction, autobiographies, graphic novels, series, and much more. I am asking for two sets of the Harry Potter series and forty-two books including Wonder, Not For Parents How to be a World Explorer and Chasing Lincoln's Killer to enlarge and expand the selections in our classroom library.
