I teach juniors at Pine Tree High School. I have a mixture of advanced, on-level, and special needs students. We are a Title I School which means a significant number of our students receive free or reduced lunch. I constantly look for books that my students will find engaging, and they engage with stories with a deep purpose and meaning. I hope to supplement our reading through reading groups in my classes modeled after the book club talks I have hosted before school over the last few years.
My Project
I teach on-level and advanced English III. The heart of our canon is American literature. The Road by Cormac McCarthy is a Pulitzer Prize novel written by a Texan. I have a few copies that I have used to "test" student engagement with the novel, and everyone has said it is one of their favorites. The book is post-apocalyptic and follows the relationship and survival of a man and his son. The themes are relevant today and address the sacrifices we make for those we love, the demise of civilization, and how humans turn on each other or make sacrifices in difficult situations. Cormac McCarthy also has a unique writing style and excerpted passages will provide beneficial close reading passages for analysis. We will also use the text to practice rhetorical analysis and contrast the descriptions with those found in Truman Capote's In Cold Blood. I already have 17 copies, so I am requesting 43 to have a total of 60 books. I currently serve 58 AP English III juniors and will continue to use the novels in the future.
