My Students

Do you remember your first day of school? The new sights, sounds, people and experiences? Our classroom has the privilege of being the first "school" experience for our young learners. And we want to make sure that we start our students' educational journey off on the right foot.

Our blended Pre-K classroom is full of life and excitement.

No two days are the same. Our class is made up of 3 - 5 year olds. Some of our students have special needs that range from language delays to Down syndrome and autism. But each of our students quickly learns that we are all working on learning something. And each student quickly learns that we are part of a community where we help each other grow and learn in many different ways. Our school is located in the largest, oldest and poorest public housing development in our city. We do not have the resources that many other schools in our district receive from PTO/PTA organizations. But we are committed to giving our students the same opportunities that other children in our district have access to. And despite these differences in access to resources, our school community is one of the most amazing places to learn and to work.

My Project

The materials in this project will help us start the year off right. The art materials will help us begin the year learning about each other through our "All About Me" unit. The students will create people who represent themselves. These people will be used to help the students tell each other about who they are, what they like to do, their families and their lives. For students who may have language delays, this physical representation of self will give them a way to express their thoughts with guided support. And the students will use these people throughout the year in various classroom lessons and projects. The printer ink will allow us to create visual supports for students who need support communicating, transitioning, completing tasks, and becoming independent in the classroom. The ink will also allow us to create personalized books and projects that the students can take home and share with their families throughout the year.

This project will put materials in our classroom at the beginning of the school year that will help us make our students feel welcome and a part of their new school community.

We will be able to individualize supports and learning opportunities based on our students' needs. And, most importantly, we will be able to make learning exciting, hands-on and fun from the moment the students enter the classroom.
