Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Special Education teacher in the South Bronx. While I am a Special Education teacher, I specialize in Earth Science which means I get to teach self-contained classes each year. Self-contained means that every student in that class has some kind of learning the difference (I do not call them "disabilities"). Because of the various learning differences and it being my just my fourth year teaching, I have been exploring innovative ways to create accessible Earth Science content.

With kids that learn differently than general education students, you have to focus on each of their strengths and assist with each of their weaknesses.

In order to do this effectively, I have to make my curriculum accessible for all my students and one of the most effective ways to do that is through technology. All of my lessons try to incorporate reading, writing/typing, videos, audio, drawing, and discussion. My students thrive in this kind of learning environment!

After over a year of learning in a pandemic, my co-teacher and myself really want to shift our focus during this school year to our students' social-emotional well-being and their feeling safe when they are at school.

My Project

As the second school year of the pandemic is about to begin, 100% of our students are getting ready to return to school. We will undoubtedly have students coming into our 9th grade Earth Science classes that have not seen a school classroom since they were in 7th grade.

Inclusivity and social-emotional wellness are going to be at the forefront of lessons and we want to ensure out classroom reflects that.

With so many outside factors affecting our students' lives, it is important they feel respected, cared for, and safe when they are in our classroom. So we are asking for materials to create that kind of space.

We are requesting some technology that really helped our students focus on their work and adapt to doing more lessons online last school year. Many of our students have Bluetooth headphones that they bring to school, but there are a small number that do not and we would like to have some at school for them to borrow. Many of our students received iPads and it is easier for them to connect that type of headphones to the iPad as opposed to a standard wired headphone. We are also requesting some charging stations to be placed around our classroom. Last year, many students needed to charge their devices throughout the day and these charging ports will make that much more accessible now that we will have 25+ students back in our classrooms.

Finally, we are asking for some material to decorate our classroom and make sure we can easily showcase who are students are and the work they do. This includes a mini camera that prints photos right away so we can showcase each of them (without a mask on!) alongside their classwork.
