My Students

The student population that I teach consists of children from Kindergarten through middle school who require social and emotional support as well as autistic students and students with multiple disabilities. However, if you were to meet the students at our school, you would see that their abilities far outshine their disabilities and given the proper support through academics and the arts, our students rise to the occasion and shine bright like stars. My students have the capability and the grit to express themselves musically. Now they just need the tools to do it.

My Project

This project is an example of how important it is to have music as a tool for expression in Special Needs schools. I have assessed all of my students with the bare bones of all of the tools that were available. When they saw me play on my recorder they all wanted to try. Thats what made me decide this project would be so great for them to realize their music capabilities.

This year my students will Rock out on the Recorder!

Our students are tuned into music and with everything I teach them they always ask for more. Our higher level students are learning to read and write music and are on the verge of being great performers. Our non-verbal students are finding their voice in music through use of instruments and technology. Our mid level students are learning about syncopated rhythms and how to be a part of the music by using percussion instruments. Our students with multiple disabilities are finding music as a way to express their feelings and are interacting more with their peers through group activities.

While this is a large project it is imperative that support my students by any means necessary and let them realize their talent. My students have the ability to do so many things and I want them to shine. This project is a great way to help them start off on a lifelong journey though music education.
